The Rehearsal 4 – Shaker Loops in Rehearsal & Performance

February 26, 2010

If you don’t know Shaker Loops, then shame on you. Go download it, and then sit by yourself and listen to the whole thing in one sitting.

After that . . .

Here is a long and wonderful clip of John Adams rehearsing and performing Shaker Loops at the La Jolla Festival in 2002.  Well worth the time spent to watch it all, and you need to watch it all.

I’m just relieved to see he looks at his score as often as I had to when conducting his music!

Shaker Loops was one of the first pieces of John Adams’s that I ever heard. In fact, it may be the very first piece of his that I ever heard. Loops was quickly followed by Harmonium, which opened an entirely new world to me! Tonal centers! Highs! Lows! Crotales! Adams’s music continues to rock my world.
