Whadya mean hot young conductor eye candy won’t save classical music?
Saw an interesting post from Proper Discord. As always, Proper Discord is more than just a little happy to start a some controversy.
Check out the list of 30 things that won’t save classical music here.
Any thoughts? I like the idea that overall everybody just needs to do their jobs better. Of course, that’s REALLY easy to say. And obviously, no single one of those people or ideas will “save” classical music. But taken as a whole, I think it could help. And is it bad to get some good press? Is it bad to have some glitz? There seems to be 2 prevailing stories that commentators like to write about in the mainstream press:
1. Classical music is dead or dying and needs saving.
2. Will this conductor/ensemble/musician/concert hall/benefactor/idea save classical music?
Is this meme a detriment to what we do?
Do we need to quit asking, “Will this finally save us?” And just start doing more and doing it better?
hmmmm . . .
The real question is “save it from what?”
from Oblivion? Only an extremist would think cm is going away.
from being only for the country club gang? Take a look at the crowd these days. Its more diverse than many people think.
from being irrelevant? To whom?
Snarky too hip for this planet digital native hipster 20 something kids? You won’t get this even if you try. That’s like trying to get your cat to do something. He will do it only if its his idea. Some will come around and some won’t.
I think the real danger is saving it from the suits with MBAs who think they know the answers. Just unexpect[sic] yourself right? Or worse, turning it into pablum. Soothing and relaxing. Or hey! [insert rapper] with the xxx orchestra. That will get butts into the seats! The problem is once you debase the currency you will have a hard time making a value proposition.
Hello there I am a community college student from Wyoming. I am writing an argument paper,
and I decided to write on the( if there is one at all) controversy in classical music. I am not trying to step on anyone’s toes. I am trying to ask one simple question. Why would you think it to be wrong or right for a young conductor to conduct classic music? The reason I ask is I think the way the generation is today it may grab us, 20 years old out of the shell, and help us appreciate the real music.
It seems to me that musicians have a tendancy to narrow their focus too much. As a musician, I love classical music, and musical theatre, and “pop” music of the last hundred years. I don’t see why we can’t have it all, or how doing other things in addition to classical music jeapardizes the classical pieces. When we can have both in the same concert we increase the audience base and expose people to the beauty of ALL music.
