I wish you well with your “Music Career”

May 4, 2010

So this cartoon is WAY too funny and WAY too close to too many conversations I had or heard as a music major.

It concerns me that music majors think they are any different from other majors when it comes to work ethic, thinking that only “those conservatory kids” need to have a real practice regime. I’ve also met conservatory kids say “I came to X school not to write research papers” when they should be grateful for the opportunity to learn about the arts.

      Some Random Musician,

Thanks for reading and commenting! The video is great satire based on what I think is a real problem for many for music majors at all schools! I have heard too many of these lines before. But, obviously, never in one conversation. All of us are better musicians when we are well-rounded and well-informed. We should be grateful that we get to spend our time creating beauty for society. And we should respect it by knowing everything we about our craft’s history, theory, and practice.
