From the Orchestra’s Point of View

February 17, 2012

This video has been making the rounds on facebook lately because it is so entertaining.  The “Dancing Conductor” in this video is quite the showman.  (My favorite moment is around 1:450-1:55, but watch the whole thing)

While he does ham-it-up quite a bit, be sure to take note that he is also always taking care of the business at hand.

Enjoy!

Yes, it’s very important to note that he is taking care of business, and he’s having a great time doing his job! I love this video!

I didn’t know Andy Richter can conduct! Seriously, awesome video. If i wouldn’t know that the conductor is in on the joke, however, I would be more outraged. The difficulty with conducting is to lead the musicians, but not necessarily to illustrate the music. This is an important and fine distinction–a similar analogy is what Beethoven said about his Pastoral: evocative, but not depiction. But I can tell from the video that Andy knows what he’s doing. Hope the musicians got the joke, too!

I’ve been shocked how critical some people have been. The guy knows how to conduct, and how to put on a comedy show, too. Bravo!

Hey, great blog! Glad to see that my former ASU colleagues are doing well and representing. Really enjoyed this video and made me LOL — music performance is fun and we are all so lucky to do what we do. Great reminder to loosen up and lighten up. :)
