Kleiber in rehearsal for the 1992 New Years Concert

February 5, 2013

Great footage of Carlos Kleiber in rehearsal with the Vienna Philharmonic.  The DVD of this concert probably gets played and referenced by more conductors than any other piece footage of any other conductor ever.

It seems they are having a small tiff over cymbal crashes.

Small tiff indeed. “But in Bavaria we played it this way!”

It comes as no surprise that this new arrival on YouTube became an instant fascination for me!

Fascinating that even the Vienna Phil must spend precious time sorting out “Where to start?” and “I don’t have ‘Rehearsal 1!” In 1998, I observed VPO rehearse in Salzburg with [REDACTED], who didn’t speak German; a good amount of time was lost by the orchestra trying to figure out that “Vee” was “V” (“Fow” in German), not “W.”!
