Stravinsky on The Rite

October 6, 2010

Stravinsky was a character, without a doubt.  A supporting (?) anecdote:

While on break from rehearsing a new work for Balanchine’s New York City Ballet, the staff accompanist sheepishly approached Stravinsky who was sitting next to Balanchine and observing rehearsal.  He said to Stravinsky “Maestro, can you give me some advice? I cannot play this passage you have written.”  Stravinsky replied, “I can’t help you. I cannot play it either!”
